Reishi ( Ganoderma lucidum), also known as the shiny lacquer polypore, has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine.
It is a tree fungus that grows on dead tree stumps. It is hard, woody and bitter. Reishi is therefore not an edible mushroom, but a purely medicinal mushroom.
